It is probably the most nerve wracking moment when asked to be a Best Man or Maid of Honor for a loved one’s wedding…do I have to give a toast? Public speaking is a fear for many, but if you are prepared and put in the time, your toast will be the toast of the town.
- Be prepared. Have a good idea of what you would like to say and be sure to practice aloud or in your head a few times. Take a deep breath and relax. Unless you are a seasoned public speaker, “winging” it is not advised.
- Share some background information about your relationship. Personal stories that connect you with the bride and groom will capture your audience.
- Be genuine. Share a fun, yet meaningful story that captures everybody’s attention.
- Be creative. Try sharing a poem, song lyric or meaningful anecdote.
- Raise your glass! Don’t forget to invite guests to raise their glasses and toast the happy couple.
